Boss Monster Review

Boss Monster is a Customizable (but not collectable) card game that came up on Kickstarter a few months ago. Fortunately, Kickstarter has been used to produce many awesome games, including this one. At around 25 dollars (We do it for 20% you get around 100 cards, which enough for about 4 players. The game plays well with 2 to 4 players and can take about 20 minutes to learn, and around 20 minutes to play.

Essentially, the mechanic of the game is that you are building a retro platformer style ‘dungeon’ reminiscent of Castlevania and Super Mario. Heros will go through this dungeon and either be able to deal damage to you (the boss monster) or give you soul tokens.

It’s a simple game, and at times can be a bit too simple. However I would recommend it as a gift to video gamers that haven’t really dabbled in card games much. For experienced tabletop and card gamers, it is probably not what they are looking for. The execution, box art, and feel of the game is perfect but part of me is disappointed in the outcome of the actual gameplay. I won’t go so far as to say that it was designed to get a bunch of funders on kickstarter, but it seems to target that demographic and the result is a bit shaky. Maybe that’s just me wanting a Magic: The Gathering style game with 8 bit art.

Give it a try for yourself. It’s definitely worth it for the money, and despite not being a fan myself, my (video gamer) fiance really digs it.

I’m going to give this a 6.5/10.
